The art blog and portfolio of Steve Abrams.
I recently moved back to Savannah to start my career as a systems administrator for Savannah College of Art and Design. It’s a pretty good setup, I’m around people I like, I’m doing work that I’m pretty good at, and I’m around a community of people who are artistically focused.
As of now I have a new apartment, a new scooter, and a significantly sized student loan bill I should be able to start paying off. I’m also looking to start doing some freelance work on the side to help supplement my income, such as web design, illustration commissions, and possibly some consulting work.
ALSO, let us not forget the Break Anthology, which has had it’s first deadline erased and moved back to August 4th… SO if you’re still interested in joining in on the fun NOW is the time to goto the site and show some interest!
(ART WILL GO HERE… Gotta unpack my scanner)
So it’s been quite sometime since my last update, I have to be honest I’ve been a bit preoccupied trying to find work.
It’s starting to look like I may be going back to Savannah with in a month or so, the details I can’t go into that deep as it’s not confirmed, but so far it’s looking good. Right now I’m doing some contract work with a small computer consulting company doing websites and other various tech related things which are helping to pay the bills.
As for my sanity, some friends and I have decided we will be putting an anthology together with it’s debut being at SPX this year. The book is going to be called “Break” with a theme revovling around the world “break” or variations like “brake”, “broke”, or “broken”. I’m pretty excited about this project as it seems like it’s going to have a decent turn out with some awesome artists contributing. If you would like more info OR if you feel you would like to submit to the anthology feel free to visit our site Breakanthology.com to fill out the registration form, join the forum, and be a part of the awesomeness.
As usual here are some sketches from my sketchbook over the past couple months, I try to do a little everyday.
So Thanksgiving just past by like a flash, it was great, I made a beer butt turkey for the folks I’m staying with (it was a big hit). There was just so much food, but after having a weeked stomach flu just the week before my stomach had shrunk to the point where I couldn’t get past the first plate of food.
As for other news, it looks like I’ll be heading back to Michigan for the holidays. So many little reasons I’m leaving NYC, but the big one is of course the lack of funds to stay and the economy not willing to help fix the problem (why can’t someone bail ME out… huh?). Anyways I’m going to be looking for opportunities in the Michiana / Chicago area for the next couple weeks unless something pops up somewhere else in the world. Either way I have bills to pay and empty pockets to pay them with.
Otherwise New York was a great experience, I met a lot of great and inspiring people during my stay, both at the hostel and at my internship and I hope we stay in contact as our paths diverge.
Anyways, hopefully I’ll have a better setup in a couple weeks for my computer so I can really start cranking out some work. Maybe finally get to work on that web comic I wanted to start forever a go.
Till Next time,
Steve
P.S. If you would like to check out my photos from NYC feel free to check out my Picasa Gallery.
As expected it took me a little time to settle in to my new environment, but I think I’ve finally got to a point where I can examine my situation and determine where I might be in a couple months. Currently I’m interning at a very cool place with fun folks here at the Animation Collective. Although nothing is really in production right now, it being mid season, I am seeing some cool stuff starting to develop and look forward to it’s eventual production.
Other than that I’ve been exploring New York City on the days I have off.
Here’s a list of things I’ve seen so far on my expeditions:
Really, I’ve probably seen more, but there’s been so much. I’m thinking about starting another blog category specifically pertaining to my NYC experience, though I think everyone has done something like that… instead I think I’ll just draw more.
Till Next time,
So my life has been kind of up in the air the past couple weeks, not exactly knowing where I was going to land. Though, after a trip home to Michigan, a ton of time to think, and some sage advice from good friends I’m starting to touch ground again (though it may be on some risky territory).
Here’s my current situation, I was recently accepted by the Animation Collective for their fall / winter internship program, which I gladly accepted and am looking forward to starting on the week of September 8th. The risky part being that it’s an unpaid position in New York City where the little money I managed to save probably won’t go very far. But we’ll see, it’s been my experience that the good things in life always requires some risk and a lot of hard work.
So if you’re reading this and you have a room to rent in NYC or know of any potential financial oppurtunities I would be greatly interested in hearing about them as those are my two big priorities right now. Either way, I have a lot of work to do before the big move and some people to contact.
Till next time,
Steve
P.S. Here’s a little side project I’ve been playing with, some concepts for storyline I’m working on.
Well, it’s been about a week since my last post. As most know I’ve been looking for work and a new place to live by August, which has been a bit stressful. I’ve been weighing my options and taking opinions from friends and I’ve decided (also due to an accidental click) that I’ll be flying back home (Michigan) for a couple weeks to release some steam and maybe do a few cold calls in Chicago.
Another option I’ve been looking at is joining a studio in Brooklyn started by a Reilly Brown. This option intrigues me because a guy name Dan will also be working there, both of which have done work with Marvel and Udon. Though here’s the catch, it’s primarily a shared space and not really a full fledged studio. So I would have to pay part of the rent as well as come up with my own clients, which as of right now are slim pickings. Though at the same time this is inevitablly what I want to do, I just don’t know if I can afford it. Any opinions would be greatly appreciatted as I could use the input.
This week I’m posting some color work I did with Ed’s pencils and my friend Rebecca’s inks.
So, it’s been a little more than a week since my last update, gotta apologize, but I have a good excuse! Turns out myself and 5 other co-workers after going to a local sushi bar managed to be food poisoned (though it sounds like I caught the worst of it). Suffice to say it was bad, I didn’t have the ability to eat let a lone draw this week. Sux too, I have all these ideas for projects, it’s just hard to pick one to start with. Suggestions? What do you folks want to see?
Also I think I’m going to be opening up for commission work till I find a career. Details will show on the commission page.
So I’ve pretty much finished the site redesign, all I want to do now is work on the imagery.
Future plans for Mightyartobot.com:
Comics with a robot / art / game / computer themes to grace the intro page.
Some well placed illustrations / texture for the background of the page (though that’s in debate, any suggestions would be great).
Commissions / Projects page – I’d like to start taking commissions and do some freelance work.
Sketchbook page – I have tons of sketches and rough works that people may be interested in seeing (thought process and what not, as well as a gathering area for all the blog images I post).
Tutorials – I really want to start doing tutorials, I’m told my approach to a lot of things are different than what people are used to, which may be good or bad, but it is different and giving people options on how to approach something is the best way to improve. So yeah I want to start putting those together for such things as painting in photoshop, preparing a website in illustrator, basic print setup for comics / graphic novels, as well as offer the knowledge I’ve gained of the past 5 years as a new media IT guy.
